THE POLICE are urging motorists in West Dunbartonshire to make sure they lock their vehicle and remove valuable items when they park, after a recent rise in thefts from vehicles in the Dalmuir, Duntocher and Dumbarton areas.

Several Ford Transit vans have been stolen and property taken from vans and cars in recent weeks.

Many of the thefts have been from unlocked cars when valuable items have been left in sight.

Area Commander, Chief Inspector Scott Carlin, is asking motorists to report any suspicious behaviour.

He said: “I would ask people to take some basic precautions to ensure they don’t fall victim to this type of crime.

“Property that’s been left in sight has been stolen as well as items that have been hidden from view. There has also been an increase in thefts of, and thefts from Ford Transits.

“If you use a vehicle for work you should make sure all valuable tools, etc, are removed from the van when it’s unattended.

“I would also urge people to park under street lights when possible and to keep your car key safe in your home, away from main entrances and out of sight.”

Other advice includes: use security devices for your home and car at all times, if you have them, lock gates and garages and install sensor lighting to activate should anyone approach your vehicle or home.

If you see anything suspicious call Police Scotland on 101 (999 in an emergency) or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.
