A GROUP of devoted knitters spent months crafting 2,500 poppies to go on display at Knightswood St Margaret’s Church last week.

The work started in June and is now draped down from two drain pipes at the side of the church, thanks to the efforts of the women.

Rev Sandy Fraser, who was second in command of A Squadron of 4th Royal Tank Regiment and one of the 100 veterans painted by Tom McKendrick for his new exhibition, told the Post: “I didn’t know whether we could do it or not, but my people got the bug.

“I had seen the display in London and I knew some people were knitting poppies and I said, ‘What about it? Let’s see how far 2,500 gets us.”

Rev Fraser said they were considering the installation’s future and whether they could use it again to keep the sacrifice of so many soldiers alive for years to come.
