DEMOLITION of high flats in Clydebank East could take a full year, councillors have been told.

Last week’s housing and communities committee meeting heard there are now just two tenants still living on site years after the decision to bring down the structures and build new social housing.

The land, next to Yoker rail station, could start to see progress next February and the first phase of properties might be ready by March 2021.

Speaking after the meeting, Waterfront councillor Marie McNair said: “The council initially had a 3-5 year programme to regenerate the area at Clydebank East.

“However I raised my own concerns to officers about the safety and wellbeing of tenants living there, whilst we emptied the flats and re-homed folk.

“We asked officers to accelerate a programme with a hope to clearing the site quicker.

“It is important that the Clydebank East site complements the overall regeneration of the Clydebank Waterfront as this area is the gateway to West Dunbartonshire.”

The local authority is supposed to deliver 1,000 new affordable homes by 2021, with plans also in motion to build 400 of those over the next three years.

Outline plans show Clydebank East would have 60 new houses at a cost of £9 million. A contract to start work on site is to be considered by the tendering committee.

A report to the housing committee stated: “The appointment of such a strategic delivery partner will be a key milestone in ensuring the delivery of the council’s ambitious new build programme.”

Councillors were told security at the site will be “ramped up” as it becomes a building site.
