A RAIL station’s crumbling stairs have been closed more than a year and a half after bosses promised to replace them.

The steps at Singer station’s platform one failed an inspection and have been closed “until further notice”.

Questions were raised by the Post in November 2016 about the safety of the rusting and sagging stairs but Network Rail insisted they were safe.

They said the stairs would be replaced within 18 months.

But the deterioration has continued and a note posted to barriers blocking off the stairs now states: “After a structural inspection this stair is closed until further notice.

“Would passengers use the ramp to access platform one. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

MSP Gil Paterson said his office had been informed renewal work is to begin at the station in September and the stairs were closed during preliminary inspections. The damage was described as “wear and tear”.

No planning application for the station appears to have been filed to West Dunbartonshire Council for the station.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “The stairs are due to be renewed this year and we expect to begin that work this September.”

Councillor Danny Lennie said: “This comes as no surprise as there has been issued for years with these stairs. They should have been sorted years ago.”
