A family outing to Loch Lomond turned to tragedy on Sunday evening when a Yoker teenager drowned near Luss.

Owais Malik, 17, got into difficulties in the water around two miles north of the village.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and attempts were made to resuscitate the young man.

He was then taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley but, sadly, he was pronounced dead.

In a statement, police said they received a call at 7.17pm reporting a male in trouble in the water at Luss.

They added: "Police, the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat, National Park rangers and ambulance all attend at Luss area, however there was no trace of male in the water and no persons were aware of any such incident."

They said a distressed female who reported the incident was unaware of her exact position which was subsequently confirmed as an area of beach approximately two miles north of Luss.

The spokesman added: "Emergency crews attend and a male was recovered from the water by the crew of The Loch Lomond rescue boat.

"Resuscitation procedures commenced immediately and the male was transferred to the RAH.

"Sadly, the male was unable to be resuscitated by medical staff and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

"He had been at the location with family when tragedy occurred."

This was the second drowning tragedy in the loch within a week.

A 25-year-old man got into difficultly in the water near the Maid of the Loch and Drumkinnon Bay at around 9pm on Wednesday night.

A police search party in collaboration with the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat recovered his body the following morning.

Balloch and Luss areas have been extremely busy in the soaring temperature and the rescue service has had multiple call-outs.

A police spokesman said: "Please do not enter the water regardless of the weather and your ability.

"The water temperature is cold and can cause cramps and cold water shock, coupled with unknown depths and unseen hazards."
