IT WAS kind of exciting and a little crazy as Gareth Gates performed to hundreds of adoring fans in Clydebank on Friday.

The 2002 Pop Idol runner-up, singer-songwriter and West End theatre star had Bankies swooning as he serenaded them with a combination of his greatest hits – and a surprise or two.

More than 300 people turned up at Kilbowie Retail Park’s Club 3000 to see the Say It Isn’t So singer, who was described as being a “really nice guy”.

Gareth entertained fans with hits Anyone of Us, Spirit In The Sky, Unchained Melody and even an interpretation of Bryan Adams’ Summer of 69.

The 33-year-old was then followed by Scottish band Elite, who kept people dancing until the end of the night.

David Pearson, the general manager at Club 3000, told the Post: “It was a really good night. I met him at the front door, he’s a really nice guy.

“He performed on the stage and customers were getting right up to him.

“He wasn’t standing off at all, he was really good with them.

“He did the meet and greet afterwards and stayed until everyone got to meet him and got some selfies. He was great in that way.

“We’ve had a lot of positivity on Facebook from it.”

Ally Houston posted on social media: “I had a great night. Gareth and Elite were fab. Looking forward to the next one.”

Gill Hardie, from Dalmuir, attended the gig and she told the Post: “He [Gareth Gates] was brilliant.

“He was very nice and looked happy to stand and get pictures with everyone. The atmosphere was good, and everyone got up to dance and sing along. He didn’t disappoint at all.”

David, who was tasked with making sure the situation didn’t get out of hand, said it was great to see new people flock to the hall and try out bingo.

“It certainly brought a lot of people in who would maybe not normally have experienced bingo,” he added.

“All three competition winners had never played bingo before.

“When he was on I couldn’t get anywhere near him because they were all down at the front of the stage.

“He played Unchained Melody and sang Summer of 69 because he’d said he wanted to ‘rock it up now’.

“He did Spirit In The Sky. I’m starting to sound like a fan. He sang about six songs.

“The staff were all up getting photos behind the scenes and queuing up as well.”

After Gareth had enjoyed a chat with everyone, it was time to go.

“Say it isn’t so, say you aren’t leaving,” were the cries but the performer was on to his next destination in his Club 3000 tour.
