FOR one family in Clydebank, it’s life in the slow lane.

A group of at least five abandoned terrapins have made their home in the Forth and Clyde Canal and were caught enjoying the sun recently by photographer John Linton.

He said: “They are very close to a busy footbridge but they are so well camouflaged you wouldn’t know they were there.”

The reptiles are believed to have been released some time ago but experts warned against abandoning such creatures into the wild.

Stan Whitaker, Scottish Natural Heritage’s invasive species expert, said: “Releasing exotic pets into the wild is cruel and against the law. Most die of the cold, starvation, disease or are caught be predators.”

The Scottish SPCA warned that reptiles can bite and carry salmonella bacteria.
