MARTIN Docherty-Hughes MP has supported a Private Members’ Bill which would allow more refugee families to be reunited safely across the country.
The Refugee Family Reunion Bill was published last week at Westminster and looks to support families who are fleeing conflict and persecution.
The Bill, which has cross-party backing, wants to expand the criteria of who qualifies as a family member for the purposes of reunion, give unaccompanied refugee children the right to sponsor their close family and reintroduce legal aid.
The local politician said: “Scotland has a long history of welcoming people fleeing war, conflict and persecution. One of the issues my constituents in West Dunbartonshire contact me about most often is the plight of unaccompanied child refugees.”
“I support the campaign to reunite refugee families and will be backing my colleague Angus MacNeil MP’s Bill on March 16.”
