Garscadden Primary School has stood on Yoker’s Hurlford Avenue since the 1930s and come June it will close its doors forever – but its pupils are determined to have one last celebration and are asking all former pupils to join them.

When the school closes, pupils will relocate to the new state-of-the-art Clyde Primary School, alongside youngsters from Yoker Primary, in August.

But first, they will say goodbye to the beloved red-brick building.

The school’s pupil council has taken responsibility for seeking out former pupils, teachers and parents to share their fond memories of the building and let today’s generation in on what their school was like in the past.

Teachers are accepting any and all memories to become part of a display which guests will be able to enjoy during a special concert where pupils will go through the decades of the school’s history as they say their farewell.

Class teacher Laura MacMillan said no memory is too small and she hopes as many former Garscadden pupils as possible will come forward to be apart of its celebrations.

She said: “We’re looking for ex pupils, ex teachers or anyone really whose got any memory of the school they can share. The whole school is involved.

“It’s quite an old school, it was first there in the 1930s and we’ve had contact from people in places like Canada that went to the school who have given us some memories.

“We’ve heard that apparently the school was first built as a hospital so we’re trying to find some information on that.”

She added: “There’s bound to be some interesting stories out there – whether it be teachers or the education system which would’ve been quite different – so we’re just looking for some memories.”

Pupils will be taking the lead on the project when they return from school after the Easter holidays and work will began to gather enough information to create the display and show in June.

Laura added: “It’s good for [the pupils]. The pupils don’t know a huge amount about it yet but we will be facilitating it so they can be responsible for what they are doing and they’ll be doing much more of it this term so they all have their parts to play.”
