THE sinkhole under Kilbowie Road now appears to be even deeper than previously thought.

Estimates had put the hole, initialy exposed last week under the pavement on the southbound side of the road in Hardgate, at 16 metres.

Now council bosses have been told it is at least 25 metres deep and includes brick work dating back to at least the 1800s.

More than 100 tonnes of the road has disappeared.

The road was closed in both directions at 9.30am on Wednesday and West Dunbartonshire Council said the stretch between Kilbowie and Hardgate roundabouts will remain closed for at least the rest of this week.

In a post to social media, the council said: "We have just been updated by the Coal Authority that both sides of the carriageway will have to remain closed to allow their assessment to progress, and also to determine the extent of works required to resolve this issue.

"A further update will be provided when available."
