A FORMER Clydebank College student vying to become the next depute leader of the SNP says his political career can be traced to the institution.

Inverclyde Councillor Chris McEleny studied at the Clydebank college between 2004 and 2008 whilst he was an apprentice electrician.

Polling of members opens today with other candidates including MPs Tommy Sheppard and Angus Robertson, and MEP Alyn Smith.

Cllr McEleny said: "My first memory of college was signing up to join my trade union on my first day at college and by the end of the first week I was the spokesperson for apprentice electricians.

"I think it's fair to say that my early political activity can be traced back to then.

"As a local councillor I want to see local communities have a greater voice at the heart of government so that people in towns like Clydebank can have have more influence in making decisions about their communities in the future."
