CLYDEBANK Labour Party members have backed Jeremy Corbyn in the leadership contest.

At a meeting last week, the Clydebank and Milngavie CLP voted 23 to six for Mr Corbyn over his challenger, Owen Smith, in the election that erupted after mass resignations by Labour MPs.

But there have been questions about the future of the Scottish leadership unless it backs Mr Corbyn to continue as leader.

Danny Lennie, chairman of the local branch, said: "The meeting was well attended for this type of meeting, the points of view of the members were well presented and respectful to both leadership candidates.

"The reason for the very strong vote for Corbyn is simple , when elected he was elected by the largest democratic vote in the history of politics, one member one vote. Labour members said loud and clear CORBYN.

"This did not sit well with the tiny minority so we are here in this ridiculous position of voting again, the membership have once again spoken, hope fully this time they will get the message, the members are taking control."

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale had questioned whether Mr Corbyn could continue as leader given his lack of parliamentary support. She has not formally backed a candidate as yet but suggested electoral victory was unlikely under Mr Corbyn.

Mr Lennie added: "As far as the leader of the Scottish Labour Party goes, it may be a good time to asses her position."
