CLYDEBANK pupils have been running a mile or three to get away from the classroom at the end of the school year. . .and straight into fitness.

Hundreds of pupils from primary and secondary took part in the first year of an inter-school sport competition in the WD School Games.

A total of 72 sport competitions and events were brought together under one banner and encouraged schools to get involved by accumulating points.

Created by Active Schools and Sports Development services of WD Leisure, it featured sports such as basketball, badminton, girsl' football, netball, tennis, hockey, cross country, athletics, and tag rugby. There were also inter-school swimming galas.

Recently, the awards for the winners were presented at a special event at Clydebank Town Hall, complete with glitz, glamour, displays of dance and a great deal of applause.

The winning small school, with a school roll of less than 150 pupils but with a points total of 450 was Gartocharn Primary.

The top medium school, with a roll of 150 to 250 pupils, was St Stephen's Primary with 492 points.

And the winning large school with a points total of 546 was St Mary's Prmary in Duntocher.

The overall winning Learning Community, calculated from all total schools from within a cluster and then the mean average was Clydebank High School Learning Community.

Laura Preston, active schools coordinator, said: " It was a fantastic evening attended by a wide range of stake holders and partners, including head teachers, pupils, parents, WDL volunteers, members of West Dunbartonshire Council, WDL board members, representatives of national governing bodies and local sports clubs as well as sportscotland employees and the West College of Scotland.

"Throughout the year of 2015-2016, across the local authority there were 103 competitions, fixtures and festivals take place within 11 different sports, enabling more than 2000 children and young people from P2-S6 to get involved in school sport.

"A key element of the WDSG is the scoring system, which rewards participation in non-competitive events as well as placing points in competitive events.

"Schools accumulate points throughout the year, taking into account schools size and learning community, and the schools with the most points were crowned winners at the Awards Ceremony and presented with a WDSG 2015-2016 trophy to keep."
