A MAN has been arrested in connection with a large fire in Dalmuir last night.

Police Scotland confirmed a male 35-year-old had been detained for alleged "culpable and reckless conduct" and is expected to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday.

A total of 15 people were evacuated from 4 Ottawa Crescent after the fire broke out around 5.40pm on Thursday night.

Three adults and two children later went to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation.

Two crews were initially sent from Clydebank Fire Station with a third from Knightswood joining in to battle the blaze with teams in breathing apparatus sent into the property to search all eight flats.

Control officers stayed on the line with 999 callers who were trapped in upper floor homes by heat and smoke, said a spokesman for the fire service.

He said: "They provided survival guidance and relayed information on people’s location to the frontline crews, who put out the fire using two high pressure jets.

"Firefighters rescued two men, a woman and two children from the flats and tended to them until paramedics arrived.

"All five appeared to be suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

"The two men had to be taken to hospital by ambulance but the woman and children were able to make their own way for precautionary check-ups."

He added: "Our crews conducted salvage operations before leaving around 10.45pm and residents of all but two of the flats were able to return to their properties overnight."

Police said the joint investigation with the Fire Investigation Unit continues.
