Clydebank's MP wants the UK to accept at least 3,000 of an estimated 26,000 unaccompanied child refugees in Europe, claiming it is guilty of a "dereliction of duty" by refusing to take what he argues is its fair share.

The SNP amendment to the Immigration Bill follows a government statement on the refugee crisis which it says offered no commitment to accept a greater number of refugee children.

Martin Docherty-Hughes said: "West Dunbartonshire and Scotland as a whole stand willing and ready to continue to play our part.

"This isn't someone else's problem, or an issue that we can just shrug off in the hope that it will go away.

"The UK government must listen to MPs, to the public, and to the experts who are united in calling for a substantial increase in resettlement to help resolve the refugee crisis."
