Yoker Athletic manager Steven Reilly was disappointed with his side’s finishing after their 2-2 draw to Irvine Victoria on Saturday at Holm Park.

The visitors took the lead via a questionable penalty shout, with Vics striker Kevin Joyce slotting home from 12 yards.

But the Whe-Ho clawed back the lead through former Queens Park striker Ryan Hynes and then went in front in the second half through Gary Arbuckle.

The Ayrshire side, however, equalised as Graeme Longair scored from a corner late on.

And Athletic were unable to reward their manager with a birthday present, with Reilly blowing out 35 candles off the cake on Monday.

He said: “We had Arbuckle and Hynes missing some great chances for us to put the game to bed and we left ourselves open and Campbell makes a great save to keep us in the game five minutes from the end.

“It’s just one of those things for us now we can’t put the ball in the back of the net.”

“We never defended the equaliser well, it came from a set-piece and it was a penalty that got them in front which was not a penalty, so it’s mixed emotions for me.

“I think the ref heard the clatter of shinguards between Liam Campbell [goalkeeper] and their striker, it’s one of those things.”

And despite dominating possession for long spells, and after producing some strong performances in the Sectional League Cup, Reilly was disappointed that his side were unable to carry that form into the league.

Yoker finished second in their Sectional League Cup group, going unbeaten in the group after wins against Maryhill, Ashfield and Glasgow Perthshire, and drawing to local rivals Clydebank.

He added: “We dominated the game but we haven’t been playing at the top of our game like we had been in the league cup section.

“We didn’t take our form from that – we didn’t play that bad but we could have been much better.

“And really we should have won the game comfortably and between missed chances and not defending well it wasn’t our day.

Yoker are away to Cumbernauld United this Saturday, who drew 3-3 away to Blantyre Victoria.

United finished three points ahead of Athletic last year in the league, but Reilly said it is difficult to gauge teams at this stage of the season.

He said: “It’s always a difficult place to go to, this early in the season we don’t know how teams are looking.

“But we know it’ll be tough that hopefully we can get three points behind the top teams that will be in action next week as well.”
