Yoker Athletic’s assistant manager Graeme George was disappointed as the Whe-Ho came second in their Sectional League Cup group, coming second to Clydebank on goal difference.

Athletic beat Maryhill on Saturday, however the Bankies scoring a late winner against Ashfield meant they did not reach the quarter-finals.

But there were positives to take for George and he insisted the league remains a priority for the Holm Park side.

He said: “Even if you look at the games we played, we surrendered the lead against Clydebank, probably should have scored more goals against Perthshire, definitely should have scored more on Saturday – it is frustrating.

“It’s probably the first time since the competition was revamped that the club has gone undefeated in the section, so that’s a positive to take out of the group as a whole, but it’s still disappointing looking back at some of the games.

“But I’m not sure a 6.30pm kick-off at Cumbernauld on Wednesday would have done us any good. We have that to think about as well, but now we have more time to prepare for Saturday and that is far more important.”

Athletic host Irvine Victoria this Saturday, and the assistant manager wants the Whe-Ho to stop any team in their league coming away with points from Holm Park.

He added: “They’re newly promoted into the league, a bit of an unknown quantity, but Ayrshire teams are always pretty scruffy, hard-working and hard to beat.

“We want to get three points out of it. We don’t want anybody coming to our place during the season and taking points, but that has to start on Saturday.”
