CLYDEBANK recorded their fourth consecutive win to progress to the quarter-finals of the Sectional League Cup with a 4-1 win over Maryhill on Saturday.

Alan Vezza’s header three minutes before half time gave Bankies the lead, before Nicky Little added a second from the penalty spot and Maryhill were reduced to 10 men. The visitors pulled a goal back, but substitute Jordan Shelvey netted while Little got his second and Clydebank’s fourth to ensure Bankies finish the group stages with maximum points.

With three minutes of the first half remaining, Clydebank opened the scoring. Ryan Holms’ corner was met at the back post by Johnny Allan, whose precise header fell at the feet of Alan Vezza, with the stand-in skipper stabbing home from two yards.

Midway through the second half, Bankies squandered the chance to add a second after a fantastic counter attack. Scott Jackson slipped the ball into Little, who in turn threaded a great through ball to Burbidge. Burbidge’s blistering pace saw him accelerate away from the Maryhill defender before firing a shot at Shepherd, with Jackson blazing the rebound over the bar.

Jordan Shelvey replaced Holms on 70 minutes, and had an almost immediate impact. Mark Burbidge’s deft flick saw Shelvey be put through on goal, with central defender Paul McLernon shown a straight red card for hauling the striker down just inside the area. Nicky Little took responsibility, comfortably dispatching his fourth goal of the season.

Despite being a man light, Maryhill pulled a goal back on eighty seven minutes. Latching on to a stray header from Johnny Allan, William Wells fired a shot low across Hamilton to halve the deficit.

Any hopes of a comeback were diminished just a minute later, when Shelvey scored his first competitive goal of the season. Bursting down the right, Robbie Halliday’s cross found Shelvey, who coolly placed the ball beyond Shepherd.

Bankies weren’t finished there, and soon scored their 16th goal of the Sectional League Cup campaign.

As Shelvey challenged Shepherd, the ball broke to the head of Little, who nodded into an unguarded net to complete another fine win for Budgie McGhie’s men.

Next up for Clydebank is the quarter final of the Sectional League Cup, away to Kirkintilloch Rob Roy tonight (Wednesday). Kick off at Guys Meadow, Cumbernauld, is 6:30pm.
