CLYDEBANK boss Budgie McGhie remained upbeat after Clydebank signed off the season with a 2-0 defeat at home to Ashfield.

The Bankies needed just one point to secure the Super League First Division title but Tony Chalmers and Jim Smith ensured it will be another week before the title is decided.

Ashfield travel to Girvan for their last league clash and anything less than three points for Steve Rankin's men will see McGhie's side crowned champions.

The Holm Park gaffer said: "I would rather be in their position than ours but football is a funny game.

"You know Girvan might need one point to get in to the play-offs.

"If they beat Renfrew next week I think they need one point to finish above Glenafton.

"So it is all to play for and as I say on the day it was disappointing because the boys' heads are down and they are really gutted.

"They never played on the day and that is football but over the course of the season we definitely deserved to go up but we have also got to hand a lot of credit to Ashfield for the run they have been on.

"We were on a good run but their run has been unbelievable as well.

"It is always the way it has been, obviously down here they got a decent crowd and that is a wee motivational thing for the fans to silence the crowd and they have done that today.

"It was a horrible day but fair play to them, we are disappointed with our showing today but I am pleased Ashfield have gone up as well.

"They have put in a lot of hard work over the season and probably deserve their chance in the Premier League as we do.

Despite the defeat, McGhie praised his side's work over the course of the season.

He added: "As disappointing as it is we have achieved our main aim.

"Clydebank will be playing in the Premier League, as will Ashfield, and I would like to think that both the clubs will enhance the top flight.

"I certainly do not think we will be going out and being defensive. I think Ashfield, knowing Stevie and his players, they will be going out and they will be a

hard team and have a right good go at Pollok and Irvine Meadow

and we will be the same, it will be an interesting season."
