Stewartry 41-5 Clydebank Clydebank first XV made the long journey to Castle Douglas with high hopes as the reverse fixture had Clydebank in front and dominating the game before an unfortunate injury to the referee dashed their hopes.

However, they left that performance in the past and contributed to their own downfall with poor tackling as Stewartry ran in three tries in the first 10 minutes.

Graeme Kyle responded with Clydebank’s only try of the day after a lineout catch and powerful drive from the 22.

That was The Red and Blacks’ only highlight in a miserable day as Stewartry continued to dominate and ran in a further three tries and a penalty to compound the away side’s misery. The result leaves Clydebank in ninth place in the West Division Two.

Clydebank 27-16 Helensburgh Back at the Whitecrook Arena the second XV put on a show for the impressive number of home supporters to keep the spirits up at the club.

Helensburgh had soundly beaten the second string earlier in the season and were sitting second in the table so were confident of another win.

Clydebank took the lead after five minutes when David Miller knocked over a penalty but the Burgh responded with a penalty to tie the scores.

Peter Watson got Banks’ first try of the day after some good phase play took them close to the away line and the centre powered over the line near the corner. Miller converted well from out wide.

Helensburgh responded with another penalty from in front of the posts but the home side continued to attack well and extended their lead when Daniel Shields recovered a knock on at a lineout and couldn’t believe his luck when he looked up and saw a clear run to the line from just outside the 22, for Banks second try of the game but Miller missed the easier conversion.

In the second half, and with mistakes frequent, the scrum was a common occurrence but number eight, David Warden, was having a fine game and scored his first of two tries.

A quick tap penalty was passed to Warden and he showed good strength to breach the away defence to extend Banks lead but Miller missed the conversion. Burgh scored another finely taken penalty but Bank were relentless and Warden scored his second try from a pick-up at the scrum and ran in unopposed for the fourth try of the game and the bonus point for the home side, that Miller converted.

This inspired a Helensburgh fightback in the last 15 minutes as they dominated possession and territory. After a poor clearance kick found their left winger in space, he closed the gap and with five minutes to go they scored another try, this time in the right corner from their young substitute winger.

The Red and Blacks held their nerve in the closing stages to close out the game and record a fine victory against tough opponents.
