DRUMCHAPEL Tables Tennis ace Martin Perry admitted he was disappointed with his results at the PTT Czech Open in Ostrava last week — despite coming home with a bronze medal.

The para table tennis player, who plays with the use of two prosthetics, lost his two singles group matches, but claimed bronze alongside fellow Scot Billy Shilton in the men’s class 6-7 team.

In the singles Perry lost 3-1 to world number nine Bobi Simion and 3-2 to Croatian Vjekoslav Gregorovic. After coming back from 1-2 down to level at 2-2, he lost 11-9 in the fifth.

The 21-year-old still holds out hope of qualification for Rio 2016 and believes there were elements of his performance he can take positives from as his qualification bid steps up.

He said: “It wasn’t my best competition — not very good at all if I’m honest. I played well in patches but I was inconsistent in my performance.

“When I was playing good I was playing really good stuff — in control and dictating the play really well. I won the first set and then lost 3-2 so I was frustrated with that.

“I just lack a bit of savvy in how to finish matches off — the experienced players know how to do that. I need to work on that mental edge. In terms of the doubles with Billy I thought it was some of the best doubles I’ve ever played.

“We have a really good relationship and didn’t have to gel or bond as that was already there we just got on with it and supported each other. There are definitely positives I can take away.

“I won a lot of first sets by going out and being dominant but then I was thinking too much about how my opponents were going to change their game instead of focusing on my own game and having the belief to follow it through.

“I’m looking forward to Belgium next month because if I can harness the good stuff I’ve played this week then I can get on really well.” Great Britain head coach, Greg Baker, said: “Martin didn’t win a match but he has shown that he can compete by taking games off good players. He is there or thereabouts and he just needs to learn how to win those matches and develop that winning mentality.”
