WITH her two boys in town on Davis Cup duty, Judy Murray took her Tennis on the Road programme to Drumchapel Sports Centre last Thursday.

Andy and Jamie returned to Scotland last week to a heroes welcome as part of the Great Britain side which defeated Australia at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow to make history and book Britain’s first final place since 1978.

Drumchapel Table Tennis club hosted the event with over 20 coaches attending from Drumchapel High, Western Tennis Club as well as coaches from the table tennis club to learn from Britain’s Fed Cup captain.

A class of 16 girls from Antonine Primary School then took part in tennis.

At the heart of the programme are the games Judy Murray enjoyed with Jamie and Andy when they were young. It showcased simple games using everyday household objects that cost nothing to set up and that help develop young players.

Terry McLernon, chair person of the sports centre, said: “It was great to have a visit from Judy Murray with her Tennis on the Road programme. Three of Drumchapel Table Tennis Coaches have completed their level 1 in tennis and we will be putting a programme together through the sports centre to get kids involved in tennis and other sports.

“The day started off with 20 coaches and sports leaders from Drumchapel High School, being trained to take sessions and fun games with primary four school kids.

“Then Antonine Primary brought a class of kids over so that the coaches could work with them and deliver a session.

“Judy Murray overseen the whole programme and was impressed with the young coaches. She also remarked on how great our small sports centre looks and what a great atmosphere it is when you are in the hall.

“We would like to thank our local sponsor Skyform who has put in a lot of work to upgrade our sports centre.” Corinna Whitaker, player and coach at Drumchapel Table Tennis Club, said: “It was a great day meeting Judy Murray and learning how to make tennis fun for kids with very little equipment.

“All coaches were keen to get involved when the kids turned up and the joy on the kids faces was great to see.”
