Clydebank and District Bowling Association The bowls weekend was dominated by the CDBA Champion of Champions Finals which were held at Albion B.C. on Saturday, September 5. The weather was extremely warm and sunny and there was a huge crowd of spectators to enjoy the six finals being played. Albion President Robert Cook welcomed everybody to the Club before handing it over to the District to host the annual Champion of Champions Finals. CDBA President Colin Ballantyne wished all the players good fortune and the matches got started just after 2pm. The Gents Singles Championship was an intriguing match-up between the experienced Raymond Hay (Radnor Park) against young Andy Roberts from Old Kilpatrick. The game was pretty close throughout with some amazing bowls on display and the spectators from both clubs voiced their approval. Andy had just recently won the Old Kilpatrick Championship for the second time and held his nerve to win the match. The final score was Andy Roberts (Old Kilpatrick) 21 Raymond Hay (Radnor Park) 15.

In the Junior Singles, Ryan Hughes of Old Kilpatrick was up against Lewis Campbell (Radnor Park). Ryan had the slight edge throughout always being a few shots ahead of Lewis. Towards the end, Ryan pulled away to finish it off, the final score being Ryan Hughes (Old Kilpatrick) 21 Lewis Campbell (Radnor Park) 13. The Pairs final was between father and son Jim and Andy Dunbar from Old Kilpatrick and George Smith & Billy Boyd of Yoker B.C. The Yoker boys had their noses in front for most of the game and were three shots ahead after 16 ends. However, there was a twist at the end as Old Kilpatrick achieved the three shots required to take it to an extra end, before closing out the match. The final score was Old Kilpatrick 15 Yoker 14.

The CDBA Triples championship final involved Billy Adams, Jim and Grant Russell (Clydebank) and Phil Sherry, Ian MacDonald and Grant Sayer (Dalmuir). The Dalmuir lads got off to a dream start going in to an 8-0 lead after two ends. The Clydebank triple responded to narrow the gap but in the end Dalmuir got the victory. Final score: Dalmuir 20 Clydebank 5. The Fours final was played on one of the end rinks but this did not deter the players who put on a great show. The Yarrow team of Robert Farquharson, Willie Drysdale, Eddie Askew and Alistair McKay were competing against Old Kilpatrick’s Jim Nicholson, Mark Hughes, David Nicholson and Derek Thomson. The Yarrow foursome came from behind to win the match at the last end, the final score being Yarrow 18 Old Kilpatrick 16.

The Senior Fours final between Dalmuir and Singer was played on the other end rink. The players involved were Tommy Pollock, John Carruth, Gordon McGregor, George Griffin (Dalmuir) and Earl McLaughlan, Eric Milne, Andy Summers, Stuart Thomson (Singer). Dalmuir got off to a good start and led for most of the game. However, the Singer seniors responded with 4 shots at the last end to snatch victory. The final score was Singer 14 Dalmuir 13. The presentation of trophies was conducted shortly after the matches, with CDBA President Colin Ballantyne, Vice President Scott Buchanan and Secretary John Anderson congratulating all the winners and runners-up. Some refreshments were taken before all the players headed back to their own clubs.

The penultimate matches in the marathon CDBA Senior League were played on Monday, August 31. Clydebank had a resounding victory over Singer and have won the league with one match still remaining. Dalmuir had a good away victory at Yoker and Radnor Park shared the points with Scotstounhill. Old Kilpatrick had a rare win at Yarrow and Victoria Park and Albion fought out a draw. The David Syme League placings after Week 17 are as follows: 1. Clydebank 53 points, 2. Dalmuir 45 points, 3. Radnor Park 44 points, 4. Albion 37 points, 5. Yoker 34 points, 6. Singer 32 points, 7. Scotstounhill 28 points, 8. Yarrow 24 points, 9. Old Kilpatrick 23 points, 10. Victoria Park 19 points. The final matches were due to be played on Monday, September 7 and the fixtures were as follows: Albion v Clydebank, Radnor Park v Singer, Scotstounhill v Yoker, Old Kilpatrick v Dalmuir, Yarrow v Victoria Park.

The CDBA Senior Top 3 Singles Final was played at Albion B.C. on Tuesday, September 1. James Shades, Jim Donald and John Anderson were representing Yoker against Clydebank’s Gerry Kane, Tommy Murray and George Bruce. The final score was Clydebank 3 Yoker 0. Congratulations to Clydebank B.C. on winning the CDBA Top 3 competition.

The outdoor bowling season is far from finished yet as can be seen from some of the games on at the District Clubs this coming weekend. Dunbartonshire Bowling Association are holding a Race Night at Dalmuir Bowling Club on Friday, September 11. The evening is to celebrate the outstanding success of the DBA Under 25 team and all proceeds will go towards DBA funds.
