CLYDEBANK Rugby Club welcomed six teams to Whitecrook last weekend at their annual 10-a-side tournament as fans lapped up a festival of rugby.

Clydebank entered two teams in the tournament and the play on show was fast and exciting — the Clydebank A Team would come out on top to take home the cup.

The opening match saw Clydebank A playing old rivals Loch Lomond. With the extra space on the park and with some quick players in the Bankies ranks, Lomond were unable to handle the impressive looking home side.

Clydebank dominated to win 24-5, David Warden and the returning Jamie Boyd with the pick of the tries.

Next up was a tougher match against Hyndland who were extremely physical and competitive at the breakdown and made life harder for Clydebank. It wasn’t until the second half when the deadlock was broken with Boyd making a lovely break up the left wing to score in the corner.

On the last play David Miller intercepted the ball and instead of kicking the ball out to end the match, realised he was in space to finish off the game to make the final score 10-0.

In their final group game Clydebank played Cartha Queen Park in an extremely exciting and fast game. David Kirkwood was the main man with Warden and Boyd again in impressive form and they all scored tries with Cartha replying with one of their own and Clydebank advanced to the cup final unbeaten and looking impressive.

Clydebank B team had a harder time of things and played Strathendrick in their opening game, Endrick played an expansive running game that Clydebank couldn’t handle.

Endrick won 31-5 but the home side weren’t disgraced as the played some nice rugby but Endrick’s defence was just that little bit more watertight.

Clydebank also lost influential flanker Daniel Donnelly to a nasty head gash that ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.

The B team much better in their second game against Cartha B and scored 2 tries to 1 for their first victory of the tournament and won 12-5. Their third game was against eventual cup finalists Lanark in a tasty encounter with Lanark’s defence shutting out some spirited Clydebank attacks to win 17-0.

This put the Clydebank B team in the plate final against Hyndland. In the final however they couldn’t cope with Hyndland’s physicality and pace — Hyndland deservedly won 41-0 with some impressive running rugby.

In the shield final Loch Lomond played some nice attacking rugby coupled with aggressive defending to defeat Cartha B team 24-0. The bowl final was contested by Cartha A and Strathendrick in the most competitive match of the afternoon with Cartha just squeezing the win 17-5.

In the main final Clydebank A took on Lanark. The home side were fired up and put the visitors to the sword with nine tries scored in total to nil with Jack McCombe, captain Robert Parr, Joe Moore, Warden, Boyd and Kirkwood all scoring tries in a comprehensive 55-0 victory to lift the cup for a second year running.

Clydebank would like to thank all teams, officials and volunteers for helping the day run smoothly with extra praise for all the players for such a thrilling afternoon of rugby action.
