CONTINUING the physical series, this week, Kenny McKenzie of First Tee Fitness (located here at Great Western Golf), demonstrates the ‘Spiderman stretch’.

The Spiderman stretch will really help to loosen off the groin, hips, chest and thoracic spine (mid-back), allowing you to stabilise the hips in the golf swing and rotate better. It also allows you to fire the glutes, and core muscles too, which are vital for power and stability in the swing.

Kenny McKenzie of First Tee Fitness shows the start position. You will see this is a press-up position.

From here, drive your right knee forward and place your foot next to your right hand. Next, swing your extended arm out away from your body and round and up as far as you can towards the sky.

Then move your hand back down to the floor and return your right foot to its start position. Repeat again for the other side.

The benefit of being in peak physical condition does not only have an impact on your potential swing movements and speed, but also endurance throughout your round. If you have ever felt yourself running on empty and scoring poorly on the final few holes, you need to look at another aspect of your game rather than technique.

Strength and conditioning could well be the thing for you. You can sit and bemoan your form, or you can choose to do something about it. If improvement means a lot to you, seek out a PGA Pro, who can outline the technical improvements required and refer you to a fitness professional if there are some physical limitations which may stop you reaching your goals.

Remember to have a clear, specific and realistic goal within a time frame.
