Rebecca only turned seven in March, she has been a member of the club for a year after taking up the sport at the age of four, the Goldenhill Primary three pupil trains at the Vale of Leven Pool twice a week.

Her results at the Club Championships suggest that her swimming is improving at a tremendous rate. Rebecca brought home gold in the age eight and under category at the 25m butterfly, 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke, 100m medley and silver in the 25m breastroke, breaking five personal bests in the process including taking an incredible eight seconds off her freestyle time.

Parents Samantha and Gary are understandably delighted with Rebecca’s achievements.

Samantha said: “She totally exceeded our expectations with those swims, her front crawl was unbelievable, she makes it seem so effortless and to take her time to 24 seconds from 32 was unbelievable.”.

Rebecca is coached by Graham Murdoch, dad of Commonwealth champion Ross, and Samantha thinks watching Ross win gold at Glasgow 2014 has inspired Rebecca in her swimming.

She said: “We went and watched Ross Murdoch win at the Commonwealth Games. I think that spurred her on she was saying ‘I want to be like Ross.

“Her gran was an excellent swimmer so I think there might be something in the genes. She has done us and the whole family proud.”
