THE buzz of the Commonwealth Games may be starting to wind down now but Clydebank gymnastics star Carly Smith is already dreaming of success in 2018.

The 17-year-old enjoyed a successful Games as part of the Team Scotland gymnastics team who equalled the Scottish record of finishing fifth in the team event — but instead of putting her feet up, Carly insists she is already planning ahead for the Gold Coast Games.

She told SportScene: “I will continue at the School of Sport, where I am doing a seventh year, to pursue further highers.

“I’ll also continue my journey in gymnastcs preparing for the 2015 Scottish and British Championships but my long term goal is to start preparing myself for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

“I can’t believe it is only three and a half years away.” The journey to the Glasgow Games was a long one for Carly who formed part of the bid team seven years ago. However, she admits all her hard work was worth it when she walked out in front of the adoring crowd at the SSE Hydro.

Carly added: “I knew I wanted to be part of the Games years ago but for it to become reality really shows if you work hard enough dreams come true.

“I cannot believe that my first games was in my hometown, it spurred me on to do the very best I could. The crowd was unreal and the roar when the Scots performed was outstanding.

“My highlight has definitely been walking out into the SSE Hydro and hearing the roar of the crowd, you knew that everyone in the building was behind you every step of the way and I have never been do proud wearing a Scotland leotard.

“It was truly an incredible moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.” And, Carly was quick to highlight the role her supporters played, both in the team and social media, adding: “I have had a lot of warm messages on social media throughout the games and would like to thank everyone for their kind words.

“My lasting memory would be that Team Scotland were truly one team.

“We supported each other when things didn’t go right and celebrated each other’s achievements regardless of sport, we were a family unit and that’s what made us such a successful team.”
