GARSCUBE HARRIERS GARSCUBE man Marco Consani had an outstanding run in the challenging 95 miles West Highland Way race from Milngavie to Fort William last Saturday.

Marco finished in second place in a time of 16.03.48, the fourth fastest time ever and an improvement of nearly two hours and 45 minutes on his previous best time in the event, in a race in which a new course record of 15.07.29 was set by winner Paul Giblin. 149 runners reached the finish at Fort William Leisure Centre within the 35 hour time limit.

On the same day Garscube members turned out for various parkruns. Andrew Gibson won the Tollcross event in 17 minutes 41 seconds at his first attempt, Kath Scott came in 25th out of 162 runners in the Strathclyde parkrun in 20.44 while at Pollok Park Alex Chisholm finished 16th in 18.59 followed by David Dickson 26th (19.56) and Peter Dow 130th (25.07).

There were 11 Garscube Harriers members were in action in the Brian Goodwin Memorial 10k race at Pollok Park on Friday, June 21. Alex Chalmers was first to cross the finish line in 12th place in a time of 35 minutes 36 seconds. Other members taking part were: 22nd Danny Burns (36.39), 48th John McLaughlin (38.26), 100th Craig Brown (42.13), 171st Martin Coyle (46.43), 194th Tariq Abdullah (48.29), 220th Bev Chalmers (50.36), 231st Mark Turnbull (51.47), 243rd Stuart Irvine (54.05), 280th Paul Clark (1.01.09) and 285th Raghbir Singh (1.02.18). 299 finished.� Also on Friday Lesley Chisholm finished in sixth place in a time of 18 minutes 12.74 seconds in the Glasgow Miler Meet 5,000 metres B race at Scotstoun Stadium.

Eight members of Garscube Harriers competed in the Kirkintilloch 10k race on Thursday, June 20. Results were: fifth Alan Blair (36.04), 22nd John McLaughlin (37.56), 67th Scott McPherson (43.04), 82nd Craig Brown (43.53), 96th David Esler (45.05), 186th Kieran McLaughlin (49.56), 228th Ann Clanachan (54.06) and 281st Derek Buchanan (1.03.37). 293 finished.

Eight members of Garscube Harriers were in action in the men's 10k race at Bellahouston Park on Sunday, June 16. Nick Heaney was first to finish in eighth place in a time of 34 minutes 34 seconds followed by: 229th Duncan McKellar (42.12), 242nd Craig Brown (42.21), 821st Tariq Abdullah (47.40), 933rd Martin Coyle (48.29), 1,297th Raghbir Singh (51.01), 1,493rd Stuart Irvine (52.24) and 2,088th Derek Buchanan (57.24 personal best). In total, 2,734 runners finished the race.

Seven Garscube men turned out for the Giffnock North Running Festival at Rouken Glen Park.

John McLaughlin was first home in the Specsavers 10k race in 20th place in a time of 38 minutes 56 seconds followed by: 28th Stephen Porteous (39.28), 49th Norman Baillie (41.51, first MV65), 63rd Craig Brown (42.51), 176th Kieran McLaughlin (49.04) and 278th Stuart Irvine (54.46). 397 finished. In the 5k race, Mark Turnbull came in 32nd out of 120 runners in 25.08.

GARSCUBE JUNIORS TWO members of the Harriers junior section competed in the Scottish Schools Athletic Association Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships at Grangemouth Stadium recently.

Alastair Stanley was the winner of the over-17 boys 2,000 metres steeplechase in six minutes 17.16 seconds and came in third in the discus with a throw of 33.23 metres, while Callum McKay was fourth in heat three of the 15 year-old 17 year-old boys 400 metres in 55.42 seconds.

On the Saturday, Alastair finished third in the 400 metres hurdles in 57.02 seconds and Callum was 15th in the long jump in 5.19 metres.

The Garscube Harriers juniors were in action in the second match this year of the outh Development League division two at Grangemouth Stadium on Sunday, June 2, competing with Kirkintilloch Olympians in the East Dunbartonshire Team and helping the team to achieve second place with 561 points.� Garscube performances were as follows: 100 metres: under-13 boys B string - sixth: Bryan Donaldson (16.91), under-15 boys B string - fifth: Huw Morgan (16.04).

For the first time for many years, Garscube Harriers fielded junior relay teams at the Scottish National Relay Championships, held at Grangemouth Stadium. The Garscube results were: 3x800 metres: under-14 girls heat three - fifth: Nicola Brechany, Eilidh Smith and Beth Brown (8.10.50).

Under-14 boys heat two A team - third: Ross Chapman, Jack Cuthbertson and Josh Irvine (7.48.25).

Under-14 boys heat three B team - sixth: James Cathro, Jamie Bennett and Craig Weston (8.14.20).

4x100 metres: under-14 girls heat one - fifth: Lorna Robertson, Zoe Byron, Laoise Rogers and Kiara Galloway (60.79).

CLYDESDALE HARRIERS LAST Friday was the Brian Goodwin Memorial 10k at Pollock Park for Clydesdale Harriers.

It was a two lap flat course run in warm conditions. Fastest harrier was Marina McCallum finishing in a time of 43.08, followed by Watson Jones (48.21 and first veteran over 70).

The night before was the Kirkintilloch 10k which was run mainly on the canal towpath. Fastest harrier was Donald Cameron who managed to outkick his teammate, Paul Carroll, in the closing stages, to finish two seconds ahead in 36.13.

Not far behind was Robert O'Neill finishing strongly in a new personal best time of 36.56, followed by Hugh Laverty (40.29), Bobby Young (45.17), Stuart Allison (46.04), Christine Duncanson (47.03), Stephen McKee (50.23), Colin Gray (51.40) and Evelyn McKee (56.15).

The previous Sunday saw Colin Gray running in the Mens Health Forum 10k near Bellahouston Park. He finished in a season's best time of 48.15. Also that day in the south of Scotland was the Mabie Forest 10k Trail Race where Yvonne Green ran well over the hilly course to finish in 54.34.

Lastly, on the 13th of the month was the Rouken Glen 10k. Fastest harrier was Paul Carroll (36.20), followed by Donald Cameron (36.58), John Fox (38.23), Brian Gallagher (38.42), Hugh Laverty (41.23), and Christine Duncanson (48.17). Paul Donald and John won first male team over the hilly course.

On Friday (28th) is the Calderglen Trail Races in East Kilbride and on Saturday (29th) is the CSSL (Central and South of Scotland League) at Wishaw for track and field events for both young and older athletes.
