THE Dunbartonshire Golf Union took over the club each night last week for their match play competition.
Clydebank and District were represented by Gary Murphy who played well on the Monday to beat Kevin Smyth from Windyhill and moved into the last eight.
On Tuesday home interest in the competition ended when Gary lost to Stephen Stewart from Clydebank Overtoun.
Stephen scored birdies in the last three hole to win the match. Stephen continued to play well and reached the final on Friday.
In the other half of the draw Chris Checkley from Vale of Leven played well and beat Michael Eyton of Dumbarton to reach the final.
In the final both players continued to play great golf however it was Stephen who eventually won the event on the 16th green.
On Friday the club also had both the past captains in the ladies and gents annual competition.
The gents section had a good turn out with four teams taking part in a scramble event.
The winners were Martin Hamilton, Jim Spence, Gary Kinninmont and Lawrence Liddell with a score of 58.5.
After the golf the former captains gathered in the club house for the annual dinner which would have been chaired by Steve Burns as most recent past captain however Steve passed away in April and is very greatly missed by everyone at the club.
In the ladies section 18 ladies took part in the golf with a very close competition - June Lockhart score a 77 to finish third, in second place was Linda Paton with a 76, however the winner was Jennifer Alexander who also scored a 76 but with a better inward half. Twenty one past ladies captains attended the lunch afterwards.
The ladies played in the August medal on August 9 and Janice Robertson won the silver medal with a score of 78. Margaret Blair won the bronze medal with a 74
On Saturday the gents section played in the Autumn meeting which also plays as the third round of the club championship.
In the Autumn meeting Jonathan Pollock went out early and led the first class field with a score of 64.
He was only beaten to the medal by Kieran McHale who played in the second last group. Kieran also scored a 64, however he had a better inward nine. Once again Kris McClure had the lowest gross score with a brilliant 66.
In the second class Mark Ward and Donnie McConnell scored 67 only to be pipped to the medal with a score of 66 by Jim Boyd. ln third class Michael Cassidy senior finshed with a score of 69 to claim third place. Lawrence Liddell scored a 68 to finish runner up and John McKenna scored a 67 to win the medal. Michael Connelly scored a hole in one at the 10th hole.
On the Sunday the five to eight team played in the first leg of their cup semi-final. The match was against Vale of Leven and Ally Roberts put out a strong team to try and build a lead to protect in the return leg, which will be played on August 22 at the Vale.
After all the matches had been completed Clydebank and District had a lead of 10 up. Also on Sunday there was the annual nominated pairs competition with 22 teams playing.
In third place was Billy and Helen Richardson, second was Bob and Margaret Blair and to complete a double in this year’s pair competition was George McKain and Frances Forbes.
Saturday was the third round of the club championship and we found the six players who will compete for the title of club champion - the leader is Kris McClure with a score of 132. He is followed by Scott Moore and Gary Murphy on a score of 135, the final three players are Allan Morrison, Sean Clark and Alistair Cowan.
The club also found its finalists for the handicap final which will also be played on September 5.
Alan Shields is leading with a score of 130, Peter O’Neill is in second place with 133, there are two players on 134 - David Christie and Stan Rainey - and the other qualifiers are on 135 and they are current holders Robert Holmes and Thomas Cairney.
