BATTLING Bankies bagged their first win of the season thanks to a dramatic late winner against Glenafton.

A spectacular Paul Allum free-kick eight minutes from time made sure of the points in an entertaining match.

A 500-plus crowd urged Budgie McGhie’s men on against an impressive Ayrshire side who are among this season’s promotion favourites.

Goalscorer Allum gifted the visitors the first real chance of the match with an under hit pass back that was intercepted by Ryan Wilson.

Thankfully, Stefan Gonet saved his team-mates blushes with an excellent stop. The Clydebank keeper was the busier during the opening exchanges and had to deal with a couple of dangerous crosses aimed at Afton danger man Gareth Armstrong.

Bankies grew stronger as the opening half progressed and Mark Hailstones came close to scoring, but he got too much on a lob from the edge of the box.

In young Tommy Martin the home outfit had the game’s outstanding player. Martin dominated the midfield and helped create the best chance of the half for trialist Ryan Holmes.

After winning the ball in the left full back area he set off on a run past four players before slipping a perfect pass to Allum, whose cross found Holmes at the back post.

The ex-Berwick Rangers man took a touch but lashed his left-foot shot into the side netting. At the other end Gonet pulled off another outstanding stop when he pushed a powerful Armstrong drive wide of the target.

It was more of the same after the break with both team having their fair share of the action.

On the hour Stevie Dymock was denied when Ally Semple pulled off a stunning stop after latching on to a great Allum cross.

Gaffer McGhie freshened his team up for the closing stages by introducing Stevie Dallas for Mark Hailstones and Martin McComish for Holmes. The Bankies looked the more likely side but were struggling to make the breakthrough.

Then with eight minutes left, a positive run from Brian Smith - another late sub - ended with McComish in possession wide on the left.

As the young midfielder cut inside, he was felled by a clumsy challenge on the edge of the box. Up stepped Allum to curl a perfect free kick into Semple top right had corner.

Every Bankies player celebrated with the match winner who had capped a fine personal performance with his first goal of the season.

Bankies now head to Lanarkshire on Saturday for a tough away match against Shotts Bon Accord, kick-off 2pm.
