YOU'RE OFF: Tommy Martin is shown red after picking up his second booking
Clydebank.... 0
Renfrew.... 1
BANKIES slumped to defeat by a solitary second half goal against Renfrew on the opening day of the league season.
The Holm Park outfit aimed to bounce back from a disappointing Sectional League Cup campaign.
They went into the match looking to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats dashed their early-season bid for silverware.
But a powerful spot kick from Frew’s Matt McLean just after the hour mark meant the points went back to the Western Park.
Clydebank started the better side and came within inches of opening the scoring in the first five minutes.
In the first meaningful action of the game striker Stevie Dymock struck a post after a great move involving Ross McPherson and Darian MacKinnon.
It was a high tempo start to the match from Budgie McGhie’s men who went on to control most of the first half play.
Too often, though, great situations were wasted, with the final ball often found wanting, especially in the wide areas.
Nikky Cairney did manage to get on the end of one great Gordon Moffat cross but his first time shot flashed over.
Frew always looked dangerous but Bankies had good reason to feel they were the better side at the break.
They kept up the momentum in the second half and created a handful of decent openings.
Frew struggled to cope with the impressive MacKinnon’s rampaging runs from midfield.
In one great move the ex-St Pat’s man linked up well with MacPherson before running through the heart of the visitors’ defence.
But as he was about to pull the trigger Dymock got in the way and was flagged offside, letting Frew off the hook.
It was against the run of play that Renfrew were gifted the chance to claim all three points, and they grabbed it with both hands. Tommy Martin was easily one of Bankies’ top players but the young midfielder conceded a spot kick when he tried to clear a through ball.
He pulled David Gray down inside the box and McLean did the rest with an emphatic finish.
Martin was booked for the challenge and 10 minutes later he was ordered off after picking up another yellow card.
The 10 men tried to get back on terms and came closest when Dymock’s late header from a MacKinnon cross came crashing back off the bar.
But the vastly experienced Frew saw the game out to take all three points and turn back-to-back defeats into a losing run for the Bankies.
Clydebank head to Girvan on Saturday for a tricky away match against one of the first division’s fancied sides.
