Hillhead Jordanhill 2nd XV..... 19

CLYDEBANK took on a strong Hillhead/Jordanhill team on Saturday in a match they could so easily have won.

The visitors to Whitecrook play their rugby in Reserve League National 2 and were keen to prove their worth.

The match started at a frantic pace with the visiting forwards trying to stamp their authority in the loose play and their backs trying to run fast moves.

But the home defence held strong to frustrate their supposedly superior opponents.

Hillhead almost opened the scoring after six minutes, but a cover tackle from Robert Parr stopped them short.

However, several more phases of play saw them cross the line a few minutes later for the first try of the day.

Clydebank came back into the match quickly as David Howie touched down, only for the try to be ruled out by the referee.

Undeterred though, the home players kept pushing for a try and after Ross McCombe received a pass from the base of the ruck and went blind. He put Parr in at the corner to level the match.

However, Clydebank were caught out again and Hillhead ran the length of the park for a score. McCombe then made a break up the wing and passed to Declan Coyle, who sprinted through with the try line beckoning.

But as he crossed the line a high tackle by the visitors was judged to be dangerous and a penalty try was awarded.

Moffatt added the two points to level the match once more.

The next 40 minutes saw some good rugby from both teams but no scores.

Clydebank came the closest in this period with McCombe being stopped short of the line and Ross Moffatt touching down, but once again the referee was unsighted and unable to award the try.

It wasn’t until the 70th minute that Clydebank made the breakthrough. After a long period of stalemate McCombe broke up the blindside, before Don Ross crossed the whitewash.

However, at the restart a moment of madness allowed Hillhead to break through some loose defence and run for the line to level the match.

Matches for next week are yet to be finalised after the arranged fixture with Cartha Queens Park had to be cancelled due to the early start of their league matches.
