Yoker Athletic....2

Clydebank....1

A SMASH-AND-GRAB second half performance by Yoker was enough to take the spoils from a hard-fought local derby.

Bankies took an early lead in the Sectional League Cup tie from the left foot of skipper Gary Lynn who curled home a free-kick after Nikky Cairney was brought down on the edge of the box.

Budgie McGhie’s men dominated the rest of the first half and should have been well ahead at the break.

But a stubborn Whe-Ho outfit stuck to their guns and made their Holm Park tenants pay for missed opportunities.

In a storming second half John Brogan’s men turned the Sectional League Cup tie on its head and maintained a remarkable hoodoo over their town rivals.

Clydebank have never beaten Yoker at Holm Park in EIGHT years since the Bankies returned to the Junior ranks.

Ally Murray was the man who made sure McGhie’s side would have to wait another year, at least, to end such a woeful run.

The big striker was outstanding for Brogan’s boys and netted twice in the last eighteen minutes with superb finishes. His first strike was a perfect first-time volley across Stefan Gonet after some fine build up play.

Clydebank had squandered a number of excellent chances in the closing stages with Tommy Martin, Darian MacKinnon and Ross MacPherson all coming close.

But Whe Ho keeper Ross Clark was in outstanding form and pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the scores level.

It looked as if the local derby was heading for a draw, which would have left Bankies needing any kind of win in tonight’s home clash with Ashfield instead of the four-goal victory they now need.

But deep into stoppage time Murray pounced to net what proved to be the winner. Bankies’ full back Gordon Moffat saw a clearance charged down and the break of the ball presented the striker with a golden opportunity.

From the edge of the box he delayed his finish slightly before tucking the ball past an isolated Gonet with ease.

On the final whistle, the Whe-Ho fans and bench rightly celebrated an unlikely win as a dejected Bankies side trudged from the field in the knowledge that after nearly a decade they still haven’t managed to defeat their rivals at Holm Park.

After tonight’s clash with Ashfield (Wednesday), Clydebank turn their attention to the first league match of the season, at home against Renfrew on Saturday, kick off is at 2pm.
