SUPER STEVIE: Dymock celebrates his opener against Maryhill

Maryhill....1

Clydebank... 3

THREE excellent goals in a devastating 14-minute second half spell blew Maryhill away in Bankies’ opening sectional league cup match.

A Stevie Dymock double and a 25-yard screamer from Darian MacKinnon gave the Holm Park outfit an unassailable lead.

But a sloppy end to the match against nine-man ‘Hill led to words of warning from manager Budgie McGhie for his players.

He said: “We played some really good football and scored three great goals but we really should have kicked on and scored a few more.

“Instead, we lost a terrible goal and we could have lost another so I think we have to learn lessons from that.”

McGhie gave competitive debuts to five players for the Lochburn clash against a Maryhill side who featured no fewer than seven ex-Bankies in their squad - including former fans’ favourite Sinky Soutar.

The visitors started brightly and played some fine football in an open match.

Stevie Dymock had the game’s first real chance when he rose to head a pin-point cross from Scott Highlands, but his back post effort was saved well by Robert Tiropoulos.

Maryhill were always a threat and they came closest to scoring before the break when Alan Russell’s left foot shot came back off Stefan Gonet’s right hand post.

Clydebank eventually opened the scoring through Dymock after a great solo run by Nikky Cairney.

The striker thundered the ball home from 10 yards to complete a great move involving no fewer than seven Bankies players.

Clydebank soon doubled the lead after another great build up. Cairney delivered a deep back-post cross which Mark Hailstones controlled superbly before delivering a perfect cross for Dymock to head home.

The quality of Dymock’s double had the fans purring but the pick of the bunch was yet to come.

MacKinnon made it three with a wonderful strike from distance after he latched on to a poor clearance.

The ball swerved past Tiropoulos high into the net for a strike that is already a candidate for goal of the season.

Bankies should have gone on to add more, but let ‘Hill off the hook, especially after they went down to nine men following red cards for Scott Banks and Mark Maxwell.

Paul McWhirter, another ex-Bankie, squeezed a consolation goal over the line, but had Gonet not saved a late spot-kick it could have been a nervy last couple of minutes for Clydebank.

Clydebank play their second Sectional League Cup match tonight (Wednesday) at home to Glasgow Perthshire, kick off 6.45pm, before turning their attention to Saturday’s local derby with Yoker Athletic, kick off 2pm.
