Yoker... 4
Glasgow Perthshire... 2
YOKER bounced back from their recent defeat against Ashfield with a well-earned win over Glasgow Perthshire on Saturday.
It was a lively start to the match with a lot of passing going on but no real opportunities.
The first real chance fell to Glasgow Perthshire but the shot just went by the post.
The excitement started on the 20-minute mark with two goals in quick succession, from Neil Schonville and Mark McManus putting Yoker in a commanding 2-0 lead.
Ten minutes later Yoker went 3-0 with McManus getting his second of the game.
Just before half time the Whe Ho nearly added a fourth but the crossbar denied them.
Six minutes into the second half number 16 pulled a goal back for Glasgow Perthshire.
Moments later a good save by the Yoker goalkeeper denied Glasgow Perthshire a second goal.
When they eventually slipped one past the keeper, Yoker quickly responded in the 74th minute, adding a fourth through James McLernon to their tally thanks for the efforts of number eight.
With 10 minutes left number 16 did well for Yoker, securing the ball from the wing and taking it past the defender. He was unlucky not to score.
Just a few minutes later Yoker’s number 16 was again unlucky not to score and a good save from the goalkeeper denied him.
Manager John Brogan insists he is content despite his team’s mixed start to the new season.
After one win and one loss, his men are in a decent position to make it through to the latter stages of the League Cup.
The Holm Park boss feels that his side remain firmly in contention for a place in the next round.
He said: “We were disappointed with the result against Ashfield.
“We actually put a lot of effort into that game and had a really good first half. But a slack 20 minute period in the second ultimately cost us the game.
“We had a lot of pressure but just couldn’t break them down. But they’re a good side - I was quite impressed with them.
“The Glasgow Perthshire game was better in terms of the scoreline but I felt the performance still could have been better.
“Overall, though I’m quite happy with the position we’re in.”
Next up for Yoker are two home matches which will decide their League Cup fate. First, they take on local rivals Clydebank on Saturday, and then group rivals, Maryhill, visit on Tuesday evening.
Brogan reckons home advantage won’t have too much of a sway on the result against Maryhill, and it won’t affect the Clydebank game.
He said: “Sometimes it can play a big factor but the Clydebank match is effectively a home match for them as well.
“ We need to win our next two games and that’s exactly what we’ll be setting out to do.”
