DON’T RUB SALT IN THE WOUND: John King showed plenty of endeavour on Saturday, but to no avail

Yoker Athletic.... 3

Saltcoats Victoria.... 6

YOKER manager John Brogan had to reshuffle his team on Saturday with several players missing.

The manager used the game to play some trialists and to make sure everyone got some match practice.

After a minute however he must have wished he had been a bit more cautious with the stand-in keeper miss-kicking an easy shot which was charged down by a visiting striker to open the scoring.

The Whe Ho responded quickly though and almost equalised in the eighth minute when a free-kick crashed off the crossbar.

However, the home side's pressure paid off a couple of minutes later when two goals in quick succession put them in front.

After 30 minutes Saltcoats equalised when the keeper again failed to stop a fairly innocuous shot and palmed it into his own net.

And 10 minutes before half time Yoker gave away a soft penalty, allowing the visiting striker to complete his hat-trick and send Saltcoats in 3-2 ahead at the break.

Brogan put on first choice keeper Ross Clark at half time to try and bring a bit of calm to the defence.

However with Yoker pushing forward spaces were appearing at the back of the home defence.

A through pass found an unmarked Saltcoats striker in the clear and he coolly gave keeper Clark no chance from close range. Ten minutes later an almost identical move resulted in Saltcoats getting their fifth, the away striker's fourth of the game.

Brogan made three more substitutions, bringing on Schoneville, Vickers and Dempsey.

Yoker continued to press forward and were rewarded when Bissland headed in the Yoker third after a cross from the right hand side.

The Whe Ho were still looking for goals, but it was Saltcoats who got the sixth and decisive strike with five minutes to go.

This is one to forget for Yoker but the real business starts this week with games against Ashfield and Glasgow Perthshire in the Sectional League Cup.
