WHE-HO ARE ON THE TITLE CHARGE

DEBUTANT: Brian Miller performed well in his first outing for Yoker

Yoker... 2

St Roch's... 1

YOKER Athletic went back to the top of the table at the weekend with a hard fought win over St Roch's at Holm Park.

The fixture was the only match in Central District Division Two to survive the elements of last week.

And Whe-Ho boss John Brogan decided to hand new recruit Brian Miller a start after securing the striker from Glenafton Athletic late last week.

Brogan's side started brightly with James McLernon and Mark McManus both going close early on, whilst Ross Clark had to be on his toes to keep the visitors out.

The Whe-Ho took the lead on the half hour mark when Miller and striker partner McLernon combined to create a chance with which the latter made no mistake to open the scoring.

Miller almost doubled the lead just before the interval, but he pulled his shot narrowly wide.

Gary Bissland replaced Richie Smith at the interval and the midfielder added a more tenacious bite to the home side's engine room.

But it was the visitors who scored the next goal of the afternoon after Ross Clark pulled down an on-rushing striker after an hour to concede a penalty which was converted to level matters.

Carson and Strain replaced Vickers and McLernon as Brogan went for the winner.

And the bold substitutions by the gaffer were rewarded when the winning goal came with just 15 minutes of the match remaining.

Again Miller was involved as his pass sent McManus in on goal who was able slot home past the despairing keeper.

It was a massive win for the Whe-Ho and they'll now look to remain at the top as they enter the business end of the campaign.

With Miller's arrival, added to Bissland returning from injury, Brogan's squad is now looking ready for the run-in as they look to bounce back-up at the first attempt.

Yoker Athletic: Clark, Bain, Vickers (Carson), Schoneville, McKellar, Smith (Bissland), McManus, Dempsey, Marshall, Miller, McLernon (Strain). Not Used: Soave, McReady, Hannaway, Nicolson.

Yoker are at home on Saturday when they take on Super League Premier Division side Largs Thistle in the Stagecoach West of Scotland Cup Round Two, kick-off 2pm.
