Smith: I'll fire Bankies into fifth round

WING MAN: Brian Smith

BRIAN Smith has vowed to add to his goals tally for the Bankies this season and warned cup opponents Port Glasgow they will be his first victims in 2010.

Despite being joint top scorer at Holm Park - netting four times in 15 games from midfield - Smith is aiming for an even bigger goal haul this season.

And the former Albion Rovers youngster wants to fire the Bankies into the fifth round of the Emirates Junior Cup on Saturday when they play the Port at Holm Park.

But despite the Ravenscraig club dropping down to the Central League Division One, Smith insisted it will be a tight affair.

Smith said: "I have not scored that many for Clydebank - I reckon I should be scoring on a more regular basis.

"I have been playing out wide which is a position where you can score from, so hopefully I can add more this season.

"Scoring against Port Glasgow would be a great place to start, but it will be a hard match.

"They were relegated last season, but they have always seemed to be able to raise their game against us.

"And since it is in the Scottish Cup it will be a big occasion for both teams.

"The last time we played against them we lost and I think we drew against them as well last season so it certainly won't be an easy game."

Smith would love to play a part in Clydebank reaching the Scottish Junior Cup final for the second time in a row this season.

However, he is adamant the Clydebank team's main focus is on gaining promotion to the Super Premier League.

He added: "It would be great to get to the final again, but I think the league is our priority. All teams aspire to be playing in the top division.

"We had a few hiccups at the start of the season, but we were on a good run before the Christmas break.

"I think the break was the worst thing that could have happened to us because we were gaining momentum.

"We are desperate to start up again and hopefully we are over the worst of the winter weather."

Before he made his move to Holm Park, Smith impressed at Albion Rovers.

But he suffered a horror double-hernia injury which set his career back considerably at Cliftonhill.

However he was delighted to re-launch his career at Clydebank when he moved their permanently last season.

He said: "It was a good time at Albion Rovers for me but I had to have a double hernia operation and struggled to get back playing.

"When I first came back playing I was picking up

injuries and I could only play two or three games in a row. I left Albion Rovers because I needed to be assured I would be playing every week.

"I singed for Clydebank last Christmas and I can feel a difference now as this has been the longest I've played.

"I also feel my form has been a lot better."

Weather permitting, Clydebank's Emirates Scottish Junior Cup clash with Port Glasgow kicks off at 1.45pm at Holm Park.
