Yoker 2 Greenock 1
YOKER Athletic bagged an important three points in the promotion race at Holm Park against Greenock on Saturday thanks to a double from striker James McLernon.
Whe-Ho boss John Brogan will be delighted to have gained maximum points with his side having not played for a few weeks.
The Whe-Ho's inactive spell seemed to affect them early on as some slack passing and poor defending meant the visitors took a deserved early lead after only 10 minutes.
The opening goal against them seemed to galvanise Brogan's side and they drew level when James McLernon turned home Graeme Dempsey's cross after a fine run from the full back.
Five minutes before half time McLernon bagged his second of the afternoon to give the Whe-Ho the lead at the interval.
After the break the pace of the game dropped as both sides tried to cope with difficult conditions in certain areas of the Holm Park surface and it was a case of seeing the game out for Brogan's men in a tight affair.
Both sides did have half-chances after the break but the main threats at both ends came from set-pieces.
Greenock pushed forward late on in search of an equaliser but the Whe-Ho rearguard held firm against what the visitors threw at them.
The VB Contracts man of the match was two-goal hero James McLernon.
Yoker midfielder Gary Bissland felt his side did enough to win the game.
He said: "We didn't play as well as we can, but given that we've not played in recent weeks then getting the three points was all that mattered.
"Conditions weren't ideal either but we got the job done. Greenock will maybe feel they deserved a point but I thought we just had a little bit more to our game and that's what got us the win."
The victory now sets up a top of the table clash as Shettleston visit Holm Park this week. Both sides will know that taking maximum points would be a major blow to the other's title hopes. Kick-off at Holm Park is 1.45pm.
