HIGH FIVES: Brian Smith celebrates with delighted team-mates in the Bankies' demolition of Renfrew

BANKIES ended their Western Park hoodoo in style with a stunning six-goal performance against Renfrew.

In two previous visits to the old ground, Budgie McGhie's men slumped to defeat and played poorly.

But last Saturday everything clicked for the Clydebank gaffer as his team demolished the home side.

Brian Smith opened the scoring in five minutes with a left-foot shot from the right

which Frew keeper Dean Sexton should have saved.

The Bankies winger deserved the break, though, for taking the initiative with a

positive run that took him past two defenders.

The lead lasted just one minute when former Clydebank target Matt McLean levelled with a fine shot on the turn.

McGhie had changed his tactics to cope with the absence of no fewer than six players, switching from a 4-4-2 to a 3-4-1-2 formation.

He had asked Paul Allum to play in the hole, behind strikers Stevie Dallas and Andy Selkirk.

It was a masterstroke that was one of the decisive factors in the Bankies dominating the match.

Allum restored the lead with a lovely

finish and won the ball in the move that lead to Selkirk making it three.

On the half-hour mark Dallas made it four when he pounced on a Sexton fumble to thrash the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

A nightmare first half for Sexton ended four minutes from the break when the hapless keeper fell awkwardly trying to deal with a Gary Lynn cross.

Renfrew were reduced to 10 men shortly into the second half when Jim Quigley

correctly received a red card for a horrendous tackle on Dallas.

The Bankies striker was left with stud

marks from his stomach to his thigh as

Quigley lost the plot and went right over the ball.

Stephen Reid pulled one back for Frew with a decent finish from the edge of the box on the hour.

Any hope that the home outfit had of a fightback lasted all of three minutes when Clydebank bagged a fifth.

Nicky Cairney, having his best game in a Clydebank jersey, found Allum, who took a touch before passing the ball past sub keeper Ian Wilson. Bankies completed the rout with a superb goal on 69 minutes from the excellent Smith who rose to head home a perfect Charlie Hobbs cross after Mark Hailstones found the frontman with an superb pass.

After back-to-back defeats, this was a spectacular return to form for Clydebank, who now look forward to Saturday's mouthwatering clash at home to promotion favourites Cumnock.

McGhie said: "Cumnock will be an interesting tie, but I think it will be down to whoever performs better on the day.

"It's a good one to look forward to, both teams are arriving at the game with similar profiles and I don't think there will be much between the two sides at the end of the season.

"Our home form last year was good. We've lost our last home game and we're in a position where we don't really want to lose any more home games."

The visit of Cumnock to Holm Park is scheduled for a two o'clock kick off and the Clydebank Supporter's Trust are offering three free adult or child tickets to groups or teams for the match.
