Rugby squad make their mark

Clydebank 48 Cambuslang 3rd XV 17

With a break in league duty a mixed Clydebank squad travelled across Glasgow to take on a similarly mixed Cambuslang 3rd XV who fielded players from 16 to 60.

With windy conditions proving difficult it took a while for Clydebank to make their mark but soon settled in and ran out winners by 17-48.

Clydebank had the advantage of the wind in the first half but took 15 minutes to get the first score which came from a silky run by stand-off Michael Starkey who side stepped the opposition defence and ran in under the posts.

Ross Moffatt added the conversion.

Cambuslang kept Clydebank at bay for a further 15 minutes until a series of forward moves had Clydebank camped on the line.

Eventually it was prop Derek Nolan who crossed for the second try which was not converted.

At the kick off Nolan wasn"t finished as he received the kick and ran back up the park with Cambuslang players falling in his wake as he crossed the line for his second try inside a minute.

The first half was rounded off by Jim Welson who finished a fine backs move by scoring the fourth try of the day which was converted by Moffatt to end the half with Clydebank 0-24 in the lead.

With Clydebank facing a stiff breeze in the second half they were expecting a bit of an onslaught from Cambuslang.

However, with a large pool of players and the subsequent frequent changes, Clydebank remained fresh and with the addition of Ronnie McKee to the team after the break a score was forthcoming when he crossed the line inside two minutes of the kick off.

Five minutes later David Miller ended a long inter-passing move by Clydebank by adding another try. Moffatt had converted both tries and the score stood at 0-38.

Cambuslang came back into the match when their young stand-off put long balls deep into the Clydebank half, which they struggled to manage.

A converted try on 14 minutes narrowed the gap but Graham Kyle soon stretched it further when he combined with McKee to break through the Cambuslang defence for another converted try.

Cambuslang scored two more tries with David Smart completing his return from illness with a try to finish the Clydebank scoring for the day.

The Clydebank U14 squad travelled to Cumbernauld on Sunday but lost out narrowly by 7-3.

Next week Clydebank welcome Uddingston in the league.
