The victory was Clydebank’s first away from home in the league this year, and only their second in the entire league campaign.

Few would have given Bankies a chance of coming away from title hopefuls Meadow with all three points.

But with goals from Derek Carcary and trialist Scott Davidson, Budgie McGhie’s side moved to within four points of safety, and Gold thinks the win could change Clydebank’s league fortunes.

He said: “We worked more as a unit against Meadow, that’s how it felt playing in the game anyway. When the final whistle went a few of the boys were jumping up and down — just a little bit — everybody knew it was a big result, it could be a turning point for us.

“We’ve went away to the team that is top of the league and won comfortably, even though it was 2-1 it was a comfortable win and it should’ve been more if it wasn’t for poor finishing from us.” A home tie against Cumnock on Saturday gives Bankies the chance to move up two places in the league. With Shotts and Kilbirnie out of league action a win would put Clydebank level with those sides but with a better goal difference — and one point behind Cumnock with a game in hand over their weekend opponents.

That would mark a huge turnaround in their season and give the Bankies faithful hope of remaining in the Super League Premier Division next season — when a few weeks ago they looked set for relegation.

Gold insists the confidence gained from the Irvine Meadow win will help them in the crucial ties they have remaining against the sides directly above them.

He said: “We have still got five games to play against the teams who are directly above us, if we win those games we will be out of the bottom three.

“It’s a short league so although we’ve only played 14 games we still have a third of our games to play.”
