The only goal of the match came in the first half when Yoker midfielder Ryan Frew scored from 25 yards out.

Lesmahagow began to apply pressure towards the end but Yoker held on to secure their passage into the quarter finals.

The first chance of the match fell to the away side. After some scrappy play and some failed clearances, defender Ross Moore prodded a shot towards goal but Yoker keeper Craig Winslow managed to tip the shot around the post and the resulting corner was cleared.

It was then Yoker’s turn to attack. Greg Maitland beat one man on the left and played a ball into Richie Chang who attempted a shot, his strike took a wicked deflection but Derek Barnes managed to get a hand to it and forced the ball wide.

Ten minutes later Yoker found themselves in the lead. Lesmahagow failed to clear the ball and it broke to Ryan Frew on the edge of the box whose shot was fired into the bottom left hand corner of Barnes’ goal.

The half-time whistle was then blown and Yoker went into the dressing room with a well-deserved lead.

Yoker almost doubled their advantage a few minutes into the second half. Full back Jamie Carson provided an excellent cross into Gary Arbuckle who was unmarked in the area, but he could not connect properly with his header however and the ball sailed over the bar.

Twenty minutes from time Lesmahagow striker John Logan missed a glorious chance to level the game. Logan was played through by Jamie Hamilton, he then attempted to slide the ball past Winslow but the keeper was equal to the effort and the ball was cleared.

There was a very frantic finish to the game when a strong penalty claim for Lesmahagow was waved away by the referee. Both sets of fans will no doubt argue over the decision for weeks to come but the penalty was not given.

The home side managed to hold on and progress to the last eight of the Scottish Junior Cup. Next up for Yoker is an away tie in the league against Rutherglen Glencairn.
