THERE’S more to come from this Clydebank side after their 2-1 opening day win against Irvine Meadow, according to Clydebank manager Budgie McGhie.

Clydebank initially took the lead through Jamie Lyden, but were pegged back by a penalty from the Ayrshire side.

However, the visitors began to pile on the pressure and got the vital goal via second-half substitute Mark Burbidge.

And the Bankies boss was pleased with his team’s reaction after Meadow had levelled the scores.

He said: “I’m delighted with the three points, and we made it harder than we should have.

“I’m quite comfortable that our best is still to come.

“We can play better than we did, missed some really guilt-edged chances and only having a one-goal lead we were on the receiving end of a really controversial penalty decision.

“So instead of being two or three [goals] up we ended up one each, but the most pleasing thing was the reaction from when we lost the penalty.

“I think there was about a half an hour to go, the guys stepped up and we ended up dominating between then and the end of the game.

“And although it was only from two minutes from the end when Bubba [Mark Burbidge] got his goal the 90 minutes it was a well deserved three points.”

And there were some notable absentees from the side that gained victory over promotional hopefuls Irvine Meadow, with Andy Paterson missing with the flu and Jordan Shelvey being substituted at half time with similar symptoms.

Add that to the injuries of Andy Biddulph and Hashim Cole, who is still working his way back to full fitness, and numerous Bankies were playing out of position last Saturday, and their performances delighted the boss.

He added: “Andy Paterson was missing with the flu and Jordan Shelvey really struggled in the first half with flu symptoms.

“The likes of Hashim Cole haven’t had a lot of football, it wouldn’t have been fair starting him and aggravating his injury, so we had quite a few playing out of position today. So the effort and work-rate from the guys was first class.

“I think the three points at the start [of the season] is everything at this stage. If we don’t get off to a good start then the pressure builds and it can make it a nervy time for us over the next two or three games.”

The Bankies host Shotts Bon Accord, who lost their opening game 3-1 to Girvan last week, on Saturday in their first home tie of the league season at Holm Park.

And McGhie is targeting three points from Saturday’s clash to set the tone for the rest of the season.

He said: “It’s a home game and no matter who it is we want to build on that with another win.

“It’s got nothing to do with the opposition, we’re targeting three points no matter who the opposition is.

“Between now and Saturday I’ll try and find out one or two things about them.”

Shotts finished ninth last season, one point above the relegation zone.
