Yoker Athletic got back to winning ways at Holm Park after beating Blantyre Victoria 2-1 on Saturday.

Goals from Greg Maitland and Gary Bissland put the Whe-Ho in control, Declan Brown scored late on to make it a nervous ending for the hosts.

But a late Liam Campbell save denied the visitors, as Yoker moved up to eighth with games in hand over their nearest rivals.

There were two changes to the starting line-up from last week’s 5-1 loss to Lesmahagow, with Richard Henry returning from injury and Stevie Young starting up front in place of Hashim Cole and Andy Rankin.

Ryan Hynes was denied from close range after 15 minutes, but Maitland gave Athletic the lead after 22 minutes with a superb 25-yard strike.

Greg Cree went close for Yoker just before half-time as the hosts looked in control of the game.

Skipper Bissland doubled Yoker’s lead on the hour mark, heading home from a corner.

The Whe-Ho went close to adding a third, with Cree, Young and substitute Stevie Howie all coming close.

Maitland had a chance to double his tally with 10 minutes to go, but was denied.

Blantyre Victoria scored on 87 minutes via Brown to make it a tense ending for the hosts.

And they were almost punished right at the death, Peter Byrne having an effort blocked by a superb save from Campbell to make sure Yoker came away with three points. Athletic are next in action on October 21, when they head to Thorniewood United.
