Local duo Tommy Whelan and Connor Stepney picked up silverware at this week’s British Junior Olympic Weightlifting Championships at the Phoenix Theatre in Castleford.

Whelan, from Old Drumchapel, picked up gold in the 94kg class while Stepney, from Knightswood, won a silver medal in the 77kg weight category.

In Olympic weightlifting there are two disciplines, with the snatch and the clean and jerk.

18-year-old Whelan completed a 115kg snatch, and backed up his first attempt with a 141kg lift in the clean and jerk to claim gold in Castleford.

Stepney lifted 98kg in the snatch discipline, and was unable to lift 101kg.

Laurence Oakden was the eventual winner with a 105kg snatch and 119kg clean and jerk, with Connor going for broke in his last lift with a 130kg attempt, but was unable to lift the weight, but secured silver with his earlier attempts.
