Manager Steven Reilly admitted the main aim for Yoker Athletic in the Sectional League Cup is to get his side’s fitness up for the new season.

The Whe-Ho have had a lot less time to prepare for the coming season than most teams, with their run in the cup last year meaning they finished the season a month later than some sides.

After winning their three pre-season fixtures so far against Clydebank Amateurs, St Anthony’s and Stranraer under-20s, Reilly is hoping they can take some of that form into the competition, but insists there’s no pressure on his side to qualify.

He said: “ Don’t get me wrong I want us to do well in the group, we did really well last year, just losing out to Clydebank on goal difference and not losing a game.

“We just want to go into that, our main aspect for the Cup is to get our match fitness up, that’s what we’re aiming for, hopefully we get out of that injury free and we can assess the squad from there.

“We still want to make a good account of ourselves, but there’s no pressure on the boys, we want to get them through for the start of the season.”

Yoker begin their Sectional League Cup campaign against Ashfield on Saturday.

They then make the journey to Keppoch Park to face Glasgow Perthshire next Wednesday.

Perthshire will be in Yoker’s division this season after gaining promotion from Central League Division Two last season.

Athletic then face Maryhill at Lochburn Park on Saturday, August 12 before playing local rivals Clydebank in the final group game on Wednesday, August 16.

Yoker’s tie against Ashfield kicks off at 2pm at Holm Park this Saturday.
