CLYDEBANK rounded off their pre-season schedule with a 4-1 win over Scottish Junior Cup quarter finalists Gartcairn on Friday night, writes David Brockett.

Former Yoker striker Gary Arbuckle put the Airdrie based side in front, before Jordan Shelvey’s double, Ross Forsyth’s header and Alan Frizzell’s thumping effort ensured Bankies ended pre-season with three consecutive wins.

After a bright start, Shelvey was sent through one on one with Cairn goalkeeper Nicky Hamilton, with the goalkeeper pulling off a fine save to deny the striker.

Midway through the first half, the Bankies back line were caught out by a long ball over the top - with Arbuckle beating the onrushing Josh Lumsden to comfortably slot home.

The turning point in the game came ten minutes before the break when Cairn stopper Hamilton was involved in a collision with defender Neil Schoneville, with the former coming off worst with a broken hand in two places.

With no substitute goalkeeper on the bench, Cairn coach Jim Lowe took the place of the 6”5” stopper between the sticks for the remainder of the game, with Bankies capitalising soon after.

Strong work from Shelvey saw him weave his way around the Cairn defence to comfortably slot in his first of the evening at the near post.

Five minutes after the break, Bankies took the lead for the first time.

New signings Josh Watt and Forsyth combined, with the latter rising first to thump a header in off the post from a corner.

The goal of the night came on 73 minutes when Bankies extended their lead through Alan Frizzell. Receiving the ball wide on the left hand side of the box, Frizzell cut on to his favoured right foot and rifled a thunderous effort into the far corner.

With five minutes remaining Bankies made sure of the win through Shelvey’s second of the night. Bursting to the edge of the area, Shelvey’s left footed effort took a deflection before nestling in the bottom corner, taking his tally for pre season to five goals.
