Clydebank manager Budgie McGhie will have to wait until the final hour to see if Mark Burbidge and Andy Paterson will be fit enough for tonight’s cup quarter-final game against Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

Paterson was forced off early in the second half after potentially tweaking his hamstring and Burbidge took a knock on his ankle in their 1-0 win away to Ashfield.

The victory meant the Bankies progressed to the Sectional League Cup quarter-final, with the clash taking place days after the end of the group stages.

And McGhie will not be taking any risks with either player, with their league campaign starting on Saturday.

He said: “Andy Paterson had to come off at the start of the second half, we’re not sure if he’s tweaked his hamstring, we’re not sure how bad it is.

“Mark Burbidge got a knock on his ankle so we’ll need to see about that. We’ve not got a big squad but we won’t be taking any chances with them, we don’t want them to be out for longer.

“It will be a similar squad that we play with against Rob Roy, I don’t think we will have anybody back from injury, we’ve only got about 17 fit players.

“The only one that might be getting closer to fitness is Phil Barclay, and big Andy Biddulph with his broken hand is still a few weeks away.”

It took until the final 10 minutes of the game until Alan Vezza hit the winner against Ashfield on Saturday, and while McGhie wants his team to be more ruthless in front of goal, he was not too critical of his side’s performance, and praised Yoker for pushing them close.

McGhie added: “We got there in the end but it was a bit frustrating because I felt we dominated the game, created quite a few chances and just never took them.

“So it was a combination of guys not hitting the target, and their goalkeeper had one of his better games and he made a few good saves. I think we were well worth our three points but we left it a bit late so obviously I’d rather have put it to bed earlier.

“I’m not being too harsh because the good thing is that we are creating chances, I’d be more concerned if we weren’t but it would be nice to finish teams like on Saturday off earlier.

“Obviously Yoker will feel a bit unlucky not getting through because they’ve won three and drawn one but our goal difference just pipped them.

“So I’m sure they’ll be disappointed but it shows for their campaign that they’re on the right track.”

Tonight’s game away to Kirkintilloch Rob Roy is a repeat of their quarter-final fixture last year, where the Premier League side ran out 2-0 winners, but McGhie thought his side ran Rob Roy close.

He said: “We didn’t play too badly last year but we didn’t manage to win, we beat them in one of the other cups towards the end of the season but we’re expecting a tough game, they finished eighth in the Premier League last year so it’ll be a tough one, but one we can look forward to.”

The Bankies get their league season under way against Irvine Meadow on Saturday, and McGhie hopes they can hit the ground running.

He said: “We’ve got our first league game of the season coming up against Irvine, which will be tough but we’ll enjoy the cup game, we’ll give it a go, we know Rob Roy will be not be sitting in defending or anything like that.”
