Clydebank manager Budgie McGhie said despite winning his first two pre-season fixtures, it’s all about getting the players fit.

The Bankies ran out 3-1 winners against Harmony Row on Tuesday night, and followed that up with a 2-0 victory away to Greenock Juniors.

However he was disappointed when new signing Andy Biddulph went off injured with a broken hand 15 minutes into his Bankies debut against Harmony Row.

He said: “Obviously the game on Tuesday was against a good young Harmony Row team and it was really just a game to blow the cobwebs away so I was quite pleased with that.

“It’s all about preparation, if we were losing these games I’d be saying the same thing, the score is not that important and it’s nice to win but it’s really about getting the players match fit and sharp for the serious games.

“But the only negative was the injury to Andy Biddulph.

“You know I don’t think the score is that important – it’s all about preparation.”

McGhie added: “It’s nice to win them admittedly but all you want to do is come out of these games without any injuries, especially quite serious ones.

“We don’t know how long he (Biddulph) is going to be out for. It was a bit of a freak injury, we’re not really sure how it happened but he’s got two fractures in his hand so he’s going to be out for a while only 15 minutes into his debut.”

The friendly against Saturday was ideal for McGhie, with Greenock playing a fast-paced style of football, helping push his players at this stage in the warm-up to the season.

He added: “I thought the game against Greenock was a really good game, I thought Greenock played at a high tempo.

“They’ve obviously signed a few new players and they’ve got a new management team, so it was a real good test and I was quite pleased with most of our team.

“We did a wee training session on Monday night and we’ve got Arthurlie tonight (Wednesday) and that will be another test as well so from game to game I’m quite pleased with how things are going.”

The manager has been pleased with his players’ condition in pre-season, but says there will be a few more disruptions due to players being away on holiday.

He said: “Obviously we’ve got a few injuries but I’m quite pleased with what I’ve seen, there’s a few still on holiday and things like that so we’ll wait till they come back.

“There’s still a few to take their holiday so it’s still early days but everything is going quite well from what I’ve seen.”

McGhie also did not rule out making any more signings for the upcoming season – with several trialists playing in both games.

But the Bankies manager said he would not be likely to make a decision on those players until the end of pre-season.

He said: “I wouldn’t rule out making any more signings, we’ve got a couple of trialists, and we’ll look at them and see how they do.

“They’re midfielders, they can play in the wide midfield areas as well so we’ll see how that goes.”

Clydebank have three remaining warm-up games left till the season begins: Arthurlie (tonight, away), Carnoustie Panmure (Saturday, away), Dumbarton (Tuesday, home).
